Updates: The D-STAR Calculator has been updated to help with linking to reflectors and multicast configurations. When you select a Source Repeater that is gateway enabled, a number of addtional Destinations will appear in the list. Select a reflector and a module and you'll see the programming to link your repeater to the reflector. If you choose "Local Net" aka "multicast" you will see a new field where you enter the name of the local net such as COMUTE. Enter the information and the calculator will update with the proper programming.

Welcome to the D-STAR Calculator. The calculator is designed to help you determine how to program your radio. For those of you who are new to D-STAR, the calculator can take a lot of the mystery out of what information that you need to put in each of the fields. While there is some good information on programming D-STAR radios, until you see it and play with some different configurations, it just doesn't necessarily make any sense. Of course there is also the little issue that some of the documentation is wrong, or just plain confusing.
While the D-STAR calculator might not be perfect, it has been verified by many and it hopefully will not lead you astray. If you do, for any reason, find out that an error exists, please drop me a note with the information. (Ed Woodrick WA4YIH)

The calculator is really easy to use, but let me give you a few tips.

  • Select your local repeater under Source Repeater
  • Choose the Source Repeater module that you are going to talk to, 144 MHz, 440 MHz, or 1.2 GHz
  • Choose the Destination repeater, if other than your local repeater
  • Choose the Destination Repeater module, either on your local repeater, if selected as the destination, or the remote repeater if selected as the destination
  • Program your radio as suggested in the next section
  • For a description of what is going on, scroll to the bottom of the page. The buddy on the left represents you, the buddy on the right indicates the station that you are going to talk to.
  • The two paragraphs on either side of the buddies describe what is going on
  • The two paragraphs below the buddies indicate a sample initial dialog
  • Notice that the picture of the modules will change dependent on your configuration
